Chapter 6: The Baby Swap Scandal
The governor’s son turned white as a sheet. Mrs. Whitmore’s housekeeper stepped forward, voice trembling, "I’m Mrs. Whitmore’s housekeeper. Is the girl inside named Madeline Brooks?"
Grant grunted, then nodded for everyone to clear out. He ordered two men to guard the door and went downstairs, the smell of stale coffee thick in the air.
The housekeeper explained: years ago, in a storm outside Toledo, babies were swapped—the kind of baby swap that’d land you on a true crime podcast and have the whole county talking for years. Madeline was the real Whitmore daughter. But before they could bring her home, her family sold her to Magnolia House.
Grant sipped his coffee, gaze sharp. He looked right at the governor’s son and Zoey. "I was ambushed last night, so I took her innocence. I’m marrying her. Tell everyone—nobody messes with the future Mrs. Grant."
Zoey fumed, the governor’s son seethed, and their whole scheme crumbled before their eyes.
