Chapter 4: Confession and Investigation
Eventually, he couldn’t take the pressure. Derek confessed to the troupe, his voice cracking as he spoke. For a moment, nobody said a word—just the creak of a floorboard and the distant wail of a siren outside.
At first, the leaders thought he was joking. But Derek’s fear was too raw to ignore.
They pressed for details, expecting a punchline, but Derek’s terror was real. No one laughed.
In the end, the leaders reported it to the police—better them than risking it themselves.
At the station, the story was met with rolled eyes, but the Opera Troupe was a city institution. Two officers were assigned, if only to make it official.
One of them was Mr. Lyman, a veteran of the old Chicago force. As Officer Lyman stepped into the shadowy lobby, the old marquee outside flickered—and for a split second, every bulb spelled out a name no one remembered.
