Chapter 2: Lipstick and Silence
One week later, Ireti come back from business trip abroad. I dey house dey play cards with some top celebrities, still get lipstick mark for my face because I lose one round.
Na so dem dey tease me, "Amaka, this lipstick fit you oh!" I just smile, play along, but my heart dey waka far. One of my friends add: 'Na so e dey start o! Person wey chop pepper, no dey fear red.' As Ireti open door, his eyes red: "Amaka, you no love me again?"
I just look am, smile anyhow: "Ireti, no be say I no love you again."
I shift my wrapper, look am from head to toe, let my smile weak small: "Na just say the Amaka wey love you don die."
My voice break as I talk: "She die the moment you and your small assistant dey kiss and dey roll for break room, dey ignore my call for help."
My friends for card table just go quiet, dey fidget with card, as Ireti stand dey look me. For that moment, even the air just dey heavy.
Beat of silence land for the room. One friend softly mutter, 'Eyaa, life no balance.'
