Chapter 8: Lost and Found

When I returned to the party, I couldn’t find Rachel or Jessica Lynn anywhere. Their absence felt like an echo, hollowing out the garden.

In my previous life, when I entered the White House, Jessica Lynn had just given birth to a son. Because she was weak after childbirth, I only saw her occasionally. She was a shadow at the edge of my world, someone I barely noticed.

By then, I was already deeply favored by Rachel, spoiled and proud, never taking her seriously. I regret that arrogance now.

Now…

“Anna.”

Hearing my sister’s voice, I snapped back to reality. Emily’s hand was cool and comforting in mine.

“I’m tired. Let’s go home.”

But I still wanted to wait for Rachel a little longer. Hope clung to me, stubborn and unkind.

My sister’s face was gradually turning pale, so I had to take her hand and leave first. I squeezed her fingers, silently promising to be better for her this time.
