The company Caleb runs now was founded with a college buddy. When that friend was about to get married, the wedding invitation was sent to our house. Naturally, I thought Caleb would take me to the wedding. I picked out a gift for the couple in advance, booked a hair and makeup appointment for the day, and chose a dress that was classy but wouldn’t outshine the bride.

Then the day of the wedding arrived. I went from secretly looking forward to it, to feeling disappointed and embarrassed. All I got was a Facebook post from a mutual friend of Caleb and me—a group photo from the wedding. So Caleb was still the groomsman. The bridesmaid next to him was gazing up at him, her eyes shining. When I refreshed the post, it was suddenly set to private for me. I couldn’t see it anymore.

I didn’t want to be the woman crying at home, asking Caleb, “Why?” I tried hard to keep my cool. When Caleb came home, I was still watching Netflix on my tablet. I just casually said, “You’re back.”

As Caleb walked through the living room, I pointed at the wrapped gift box on the coffee table. “This is the necklace I bought for the bride. Remember to give it to her.”

Caleb replied with a quiet, “Mm.”

This left a huge hole in my heart. I heard the ice maker rumble in the kitchen. My eyes stung, but I kept scrolling through show after show, pretending the blue glow from the screen was all I needed. The blue light of my phone screen made everything feel colder, the silence in the room stretching until it hurt.

I laughed at a joke on the show, too loud and too late, hoping Caleb wouldn’t notice.
