Chapter 5: Collision Course
The moment Ryan barged in, Matthew quickly threw his coat over me, pressing my face to his chest.
His reflexes were lightning-fast. The coat was warm and heavy, smelling like him—cedar and something darker. I pressed my face against his chest, heart pounding in my ears.
I lay on his lap, heart pounding out of my chest.
My breath came in short, ragged bursts. I could feel Matthew’s heartbeat, steady and strong beneath my cheek.
My face was hidden by his coat, only my bare legs showing.
I tried to pull the coat tighter, but my hands were shaking too much. My legs felt exposed, but I was too stunned to move.
Ryan gave us a look. "Wow, didn’t know you two were into that."
His voice was mocking, but there was a hint of jealousy underneath. He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, trying to look nonchalant.
Matthew shot back, cold as ice: "Not your business."
His voice was sharp, every word laced with warning. He didn’t bother to look at Ryan, his attention focused on me.
Ryan laughed, taunting: "You know, tonight’s Lila’s first heat as a succubus. She came begging me for help. Tell me, Matt, should I have helped her or not?"
His words hung in the air, daring Matthew to react. The tension crackled, thick as the storm outside. I held my breath, waiting to see what would happen next.
