Chapter 7: Legend and Orphan

A thousand years ago, my Foster family, in order to hold back the darkness, had all the strong ones give up their power and leap into the Foster River. Only then did the world have a thousand years of peace.

That story was family legend—Grandpa used to tell that story with a shot of whiskey in hand, eyes shining with pride and regret. No medals, just sacrifice, and the world spun on.

I am the only orphan of the Fosters. With such a small request, surely the President wouldn’t refuse me.

Maybe all it takes is one person standing up—one person carrying the weight of a thousand years.
