Chapter 10: The Breaking Point
Before I knew it, Emily’s due date arrived.
The hospital smelled of antiseptic and burnt coffee. My in-laws hovered anxiously. I checked my phone, waiting for news from the nurse.
The doctor explained that family could be present for the birth and hoped I’d witness what Emily was going through. She smiled kindly, but I forced a smile back, feeling sick with dread and guilt.
Emily caught my eye and shook her head. “Doctor, better not let my husband in. I don’t want him to see me at my most embarrassing.”
Her voice was steady, but I could see the relief. She was protecting me, even now.
The doctor nodded and left. I sagged in my chair, scrolling my phone, waiting for it to be over.
Soon, Emily’s screams echoed down the hallway. My in-laws clung to each other, crying at the sound of their daughter’s pain.
I felt detached, watching it all like a bad movie. I checked my watch, wishing it would end.
Emily refused anesthesia, convinced natural birth was best. I thought she was stubborn, but I kept it to myself.
My mother-in-law watched me, waiting for me to break down. I forced a few tears, dabbing at my eyes with a tissue.
Just then, Madison’s message popped up: [Your wife is giving birth. Are you feeling sorry for her?]
I replied: [For her, I feel nothing. If it were you, I’d feel a thousand arrows in my heart.]
She responded: [I’m in the hospital’s underground parking lot. Want to come down?]
My heart jumped. I knew what she meant. But my wife was giving birth, my in-laws were right there. Wasn’t leaving now going too far?
Madison sent another message: [You have five minutes. If you don’t come, I’m leaving.]
I gritted my teeth, stood up, and mumbled about getting some air. As the elevator doors slid shut, I heard Emily scream my name. I kept walking.
