Chapter 5: Resetting Fate, Rewriting Love

By now, we’d reached the CEO’s office.

The door was open, and I saw Elena stumble, then lunge straight at Ethan.

The receptionist was excited. “See! I told you, Elena is the most special person in the CEO’s heart. He can’t even say a harsh word to her. They…”

Before she finished, I met Ethan’s eyes.

He looked at me, and in that instant, I saw a flicker of panic. Then, suddenly, he shoved Elena away, rolling himself three and a half times to the other side.

At the same time, he yelled at the top of his lungs: “Get lost!”

There was a sharp smack.

Elena scrambled up, still clutching her coffee cup. “Mr. Morgan, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it!”

As she spoke, tears streamed down her face. She looked genuinely wronged.

But Ethan reached out to me, sounding even more aggrieved: “Riley, help me up.”

To avoid Elena, Ethan had twisted his waist.

Plus the bruise from his earlier fall, he was really having a rough time.

After everyone left, I helped Ethan lie down.

His toned waist was already bruised, the color spreading down to the edge of his pants, the metal belt buckle glinting coldly.

I pursed my lips, met Ethan’s gaze, and for some reason my face felt a little hot. “You—you can put the medicine on yourself.”

Ethan grabbed my hand. “Ow, Riley, have a heart, will you? I really hurt from that fall just now.”

He sounded so pitiful.

I rolled my eyes, but I couldn’t help but smile a little.

“Actually, you didn’t have to dodge. According to the novel, at most you’d just kiss her.”

Unexpectedly, Ethan’s eyes widened, looking offended. “What are you saying? Am I that kind of guy?”

“A man’s dignity is very important!”

“If a guy doesn’t value himself, how is he any different from a wilted lettuce?”

Ethan rattled off a whole speech, full of righteous indignation.

I blurted out, “Then why did you kiss me earlier?”

I regretted it as soon as I said it.

Because Ethan suddenly leaned in with a blank face, his dark eyes reflecting my stunned look.

His breath was warm, the heat brushing my nose. “That’s because…”

He suddenly burst out laughing, then returned to his aggrieved look. He blinked, raising his face: “Then you kiss me back.”

I rolled my eyes and pressed on his bruise. “Stop flirting.”

“Ow!”

So much for the cold CEO image.

That whole day, I just followed Ethan around.

So exhausting. Being an employee is really tough.

And there was even a dinner party.

Under Ethan’s pleading gaze, I sighed and agreed to go with him.

The meeting with the business partner went very well. Amid the toasts, the light fell on Ethan’s handsome face—he was almost unfairly good-looking.

The only weird thing was, the partner kept calling me “Mrs. Morgan,” and no matter how many times I corrected him, it didn’t help.

Just as we were enjoying ourselves, the door burst open.

Elena, with her big innocent eyes, rushed in holding some documents.

Ethan quickly pulled the partner over, using him as a shield.

So Elena tripped and fell right into the partner’s arms.

The partner, another young CEO, was initially annoyed, but when he saw Elena’s flustered expression, his gaze changed.

Elena hurriedly apologized: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it!”

Honestly, the way she slid into his arms, it’s hard to believe it was just an accident.

But the partner, who had just been all business, suddenly seemed like a different person, hugging Elena and speaking in a deep voice: “Woman, you’re playing with fire.”

Ethan couldn’t help but gag.

Elena quickly pulled away: “I—I just came to deliver documents. Don’t be like this.”

Ethan said sternly, “Mr. Chen, please behave. She’s an employee of my company.”

“Name your price, I want her.” Mr. Chen was full of CEO energy, his eyes never leaving Elena.

Ethan rubbed his hands like a fly. “Firing an employee for no reason means severance. Why don’t you just poach her and have her resign?”

You can tell he’s a true capitalist.

Elena was trembling with anger. “Mr. Morgan, you’re insulting my dignity!”

Ethan was dumbfounded. “Think about how many deals you almost ruined for me.”

“With your skills, someone poaching you is already a miracle. Why don’t you know what’s good for you?” Ethan sounded more and more aggrieved. “Why are you so clueless?”

Ethan is probably the first CEO to call the heroine clueless.
