Chapter 4: The Woman He Chose
There was another person in the yard—a graceful, slender woman, with gentle eyes and soft features.
Her manner was warm and patient, so different from Caleb’s cold indifference. She was kindly teaching Mason, reaching out to steady him whenever he wobbled, worried he’d fall.
That was Aubrey Monroe.
When it comes to her, I never know what to say. Because she has nothing to do with me. Only Caleb and Mason are especially close to her.
It was already noon. Not far away, wisps of white smoke curled from a neighbor’s grill. Outside the house, birds and cicadas sang in the maples.
Amid all this, the scene inside the yard looked like a peaceful, harmonious family of three.
I couldn’t help but wonder—
In my last life, after I was gone, when Caleb took Mason and Aubrey to Boise, did they also live like this in their fancy apartment?
I stood there for a while, my gaze lingering.
Caleb noticed me. He always had a sharp sense for things. He sensed an extra presence and looked toward the front door.
As if disturbed by an uninvited guest, a chill flashed in his eyes.
But when he saw it was me, his expression shifted to surprise.
"Lillian?"
His voice sounded almost out of place, like he’d never expected to see me on my own doorstep.
