Chapter 5: Who’s Next?
Everyone shook their heads, whispering that Caleb was losing it. Rachel stepped in, voice hard. “If that’s the case, hurry up and finish the task. You have to sit for ten minutes—Lillian Carter didn’t specify a time limit, so maybe it’s a trap. If we’re gonna do this, we do it by the book. Who's the second unluckiest? Stand up. It’s humiliating, but if we finish this, it’ll boost our morale.” She tried to sound hopeful, but nobody bought it.
No matter how many times Rachel shouted, no one stood up. The tension was suffocating. Roommate Natalie whispered, “No way, there can't be no second unluckiest, right?” Marcus frowned, “Hurry up and stand out. If we have to find you, we won't be so nice. This is for the whole class, not just you.” Still, no one moved.
Caleb’s anger boiled over. He stomped his foot, face blotchy, kicked a desk, then smashed a stool against the wall. Bang! Bang! Bang! “Damn it, you’re trying to kill me! Playing this kind of trick—think I can't find you? When I do, I'll beat you up first!”
Rachel’s patience snapped. She pulled out her phone and clicked on the cash drop. "What are you hiding for, so selfish. What’s the matter, someone too broke for a smartphone? Or just too scared to play?" Her words were bitter, echoing class resentment. She scrolled, eyes narrowed. "Tsk tsk, poor student, you probably don’t even know there’s such a thing as a cash drop record."
Suddenly, she froze. "Why can't I check the cash drop record?" She tapped at her screen, over and over. Everyone checked—the list was blank. Lillian Carter didn’t want anyone to find the second unluckiest.
A new rule appeared. [13 minutes left until time ends] [Consider 10 minutes to sit. If the second unluckiest student isn't found in the remaining 3 minutes, there will be punishment.] [Countdown: 2:49... 2:48...]
The timer on our phones ticked down. Nobody moved. Who would break first?
