Chapter 3: Leaving the Nest

Before dawn, Natalie packed her bags and left, Derek’s words ringing in her ears: "No matter what, wherever I am is your home."

She slipped out, suitcase wheels thumping across the hardwood, never looking back. Derek’s old truck idled in the driveway, exhaust curling in the cold. Mom sat at the kitchen table, refusing breakfast, tears slipping down her cheeks.

I tried to comfort her. "Kids grow up and have their own ideas. We have to let her go."

I poured her coffee, squeezing her hand, pretending to be brave. The house felt empty, Natalie’s laughter and scent gone. The silence pressed in.

Determined not to enable Natalie’s choices, I called my sister, arranged to sell the house and car, and froze my accounts. My sister badgered me for answers, but I dodged her questions. "You’ll get it someday," I said, shutting the door on the past. No more rescues. Not this time.
