Chapter 3: A Too-Perfect Home

My sister took my duffel herself and led me to the guest room. I clung to her arm affectionately.

“Sis, are you happy here at the Morgan house?”

She patted my hand reassuringly.

“Don’t worry. Your brother-in-law treats me very well.”

From her words, I learned that Derek and everyone in the household treated her with great respect. No one blamed her for being childless after three years of marriage. She had the best food, clothes, and everything she needed, and she managed the household herself. Derek, aside from running his businesses, spent all his time at home with her. He seemed almost too perfect, like someone out of a story.

The way she said it, you could tell she meant it. Still, I watched her closely, trying to pick up on anything she wasn’t saying out loud. In the South, hospitality runs deep, but so does gossip and keeping up appearances.

Was he truly sincere, or did he have hidden motives? The Morgan family of Savannah and the Bennett family—two business powerhouses, known as the Twin Pillars of North and South. Whatever the Bennetts had, the Morgans had as well. If he was plotting against my sister and our family, what could he possibly want?

Before I could dwell on it, a housekeeper came to announce dinner. I took my sister’s hand and went to eat.

I could smell fried chicken and fresh-baked biscuits wafting down the hall—Southern comfort food at its finest. My stomach grumbled, but my mind stayed sharp, eyes and ears open for anything out of place.
