Chapter 4: The Confession and the Escape Plan

If na only the red line, I for say na coincidence. But as the guy sabi about the sleeping-for-sand matter, I begin fear say him really know something.

I dey remember all the small-small strange things wey my wife dey do. Like the time she tell me say she no dey like to cook with salt on Fridays. Or how she dey lock bathroom door for two hours dey hum song I never hear before.

I remember how he warn me say make I prepare for death. My body start dey shake.

I just add am as friend, sharp sharp.

He accept immediately.

"So you don believe me now?"

I no even get time form, I reply fast: "I believe! Abeg, baba, help me!"

I dey pray say maybe this one na real native doctor wey fit help me find solution.

"...You get am wrong. I just warn you make you prepare. I no say I go save you. If I put hand for another person wahala, e go reach me."

I type fast: "How much you want?"

"No be money matter. When you do bad thing, you suppose know say e get consequence."

My hand dey sweat sotay phone almost slip. "Wetin I do? From day one wey I meet and love my wife, I never do her bad. How I be wicked?"

He reply: "If you no want make people know, no do wetin you go regret."

The way the guy dey talk, e be like say him know something I no know. Fear begin hook me for throat.

After that, no matter how I beg, the guy no reply me again.

I dey type: "At least tell me wetin happen make I die know! Baba, abeg, just talk how much you want. I go give you everything."

Still, nothing. My panic just dey increase.

My wife dey sleep for next room, I dey suffocate for fear.

I tiptoe go, carry charger and wallet.

For my mind, I dey whisper, "God abeg, cover me."

I dey plan say if anything happen, at least make I get small money for hand. Lagos na place wey if you run commot, you fit disappear inside crowd till morning.

No matter the truth, make I just run first. Whether na my wife dey dangerous or na the guy dey scare me, to run no go bad.

But as I touch the door handle—

My phone light up:

"If na me be you, I no go comot tonight."

The message land, my body freeze. The door cold pass freezer. Wetin I go do?
