Chapter 4: The Real Villain

“Papa, Raj is hurt. Can I spend more time at the hospital?”

I nodded. “Of course.”

“I might come home late. Can you pick me up?”

“No.”

The WhatsApp forwards exploded:

[Dad is acting up again.]

[Says he’s supportive, then blocks the heroine!]

Ananya’s eyes filled with tears. “Papa, Raj is really badly hurt. I’m worried.”

“What’s that got to do with me? I need sleep, beta. If you’re scared, sleep at the hospital.”

She stared, stunned.

WhatsApp forwards went berserk:

[He’s supposed to stop her!]

[Letting a girl sleep out—irresponsible!]

[No pleasing these people—if he interferes, he’s the villain; if not, he’s careless!]

[He thinks the heroine will give up, but she killed her father for love last time!]

That last line stung: Killed her father?

Ever since I became Ananya’s father, I’d given her everything—except her wish to quit studying for Raj. And now, I’d be killed by my own daughter?

I waved her away, exhausted. “If there’s nothing else, I need to sleep. I have to take Kunal out tomorrow.”

“Kunal? Who’s that?”

“A kid. Now let me rest.”

The WhatsApp forwards scrolled:

[Who’s Kunal? Random side character?]

[Probably not important—ignore him.]

But as I drifted to sleep, I wondered: was I the real villain in this story, or just a tired father lost in someone else’s WhatsApp script?
