Chapter 9: Rivalry and Rescue

Competition’s normal. If it were anyone else, I wouldn’t mind. But Noah’s family runs a multi-billion-dollar consumer goods empire. What does he need a barbecue joint for?

My family used to be among the Savannah elite. But my parents died young and suddenly. I was just a kid, clueless. The family assets were carved up by shareholders and uncles. All I got was a struggling barbecue chain.

Lillian saw how I gritted my teeth and fought to keep the business alive. I don’t believe she doesn’t know what kind of impact Noah opening a shop on this street would have on me.

Lillian glanced at me and Natalie. After a few seconds, she said lightly:

“Don’t be petty. Helping Noah won’t hurt you.”

Where does he get the nerve?

“Caleb, come on.” Noah looked sincere, inviting me again.

I turned, ready to sneer—

“He has plans, it’s not convenient.”

Natalie, who’d been quietly standing by, suddenly spoke up.

Everyone looked at her in surprise. But she stayed calm, her delicate brows curving as she smiled at Lillian:

“He’s coming to my place.”

Then she tilted her head, stuck out her tongue at me playfully.

“Didn’t you say you’d take responsibility for me? Shall we go?”
