Chapter 8: Goodbye, Harrison
Savannah was in the design department, and as leader, I was responsible for everyone. Even though I disliked her, I went to see her before leaving work.
I knocked gently, hoping to keep things civil. I wanted to give her every chance.
Unexpectedly, Harrison was there, leaning against her office door as if waiting for her. Seeing me, he was surprised, then asked, “Lillian, looking for Savannah?”
His tone was casual, but I could sense an undercurrent of tension.
I nodded, “She hasn’t handed in her design draft.”
I tried to keep my voice neutral, not wanting to make a scene.
Harrison was relaxed, dismissive: “No need. She’ll go with us to Belgium for the competition and prove herself then.”
His words stung. I felt the rules slipping away, replaced by something I didn’t recognize.
I replied, “Oh.” Harrison looked at me and added, “Also, Savannah told me from now on she’ll wear whatever she likes—no need to follow so many rules.”
His tone was gentle, but I heard the rebuke underneath. I opened my mouth to explain but couldn’t find the words, only watched as Savannah came out and stood beside Harrison.
She smiled at me, inviting, “I’m meeting a client tonight. Harrison’s coming with me. Want to join us?”
Her invitation was syrupy sweet, but I could feel the challenge in it.
Harrison stood beside her, silent. My heart ached. I shook my head, “You two go ahead.”
I forced a smile, but inside, I felt like I was watching something precious slip through my fingers.
