Chapter 5: Lanterns and Longings
So I lost another chance to get out of the house.
For Harrison’s birthday, a ton of people would be there. My gift had to stand out.
I went to Elena’s room several times for advice, but she was always out, probably shopping.
As I walked, I wondered—Harrison has everything. What could I possibly get him?
"Ow!"
Lost in thought, I ran right into a wall of muscle.
Rubbing my forehead, I looked up into Harrison’s annoyed eyes, biting back my complaint.
"Back from work? Elena isn’t in."
I greeted him, hoping he wouldn’t make me write lines or give me some other embarrassing punishment at the party.
"So, you came to see me?"
Is Harrison really that clueless? Of course I was looking for Elena…
But I could use the chance to ask what gift he wants.
I walked over, smiling guiltily:
"Yeah, I wanted to ask what you like, so I can get you something."
"Oh? That’s thoughtful."
He seemed skeptical, but his anger faded, a smile tugging at his lips.
After a moment, he leaned close, teasing:
"Maddie says you’re like the hero in the puppet show. Why not dress up and let me see? I’ll be your biggest fan!"
He grinned slyly, making me stomp off in a huff.
But he grabbed my arm, squeezed my cheek:
"Why are you so easy to tease!"
I rolled my eyes, pouting, and he laughed even harder.
Even Maddie was giggling behind her hand.
Hmph! Am I not the Governor’s fiancée?
I tried to pull away, but he pulled me into his arms.
"How could I let you embarrass yourself in public? If I want to watch, it’ll be just us."
He whispered so only I could hear, his breath hot on my face, making me flush and my heart skip. Seriously, does he have to sit this close?
I slapped his hand away, ready to go back to my room.
Just then, Elena came back from shopping, smiling bright.
