Aubrey’s mom was just a former housekeeper who managed to get with my dad, so he looked down on her too.

But she always liked to act weak, making it seem as if I bullied her.

And every time, Derek would just happen to catch me ‘bullying’ Aubrey.

It’s laughable that he can’t see through her tricks and keeps falling for them.

For this younger sister, he always spoke harshly to me and argued with me.

"Mom, I don’t want to marry Derek."

That evening, when Mom got back from Grandma’s house, I told her this flat out.

The kitchen smelled of pot roast and stress. Mom set her purse on the counter and turned, eyebrows raised. It was the first time I’d ever defied our family’s plans so openly.

Mom was shocked, then frowned.

"Natalie, I heard about what happened today. Derek was way out of line, but that brat in the guest house is as sneaky as her mom, always scheming and flirting with men."

Mom stroked my pale face, her heart aching, jaw clenched in anger.

She pressed her lips together, pulling me close like she had when I was little and scraped my knees. "Don’t let them get under your skin, honey."

"Don’t worry, I’ve already spoken to your dad. We’ll arrange her wedding for the same day as yours and marry her off quick, so she won’t be a problem."

My throat tightened. I’d never said no to my parents, not like this. But I shook my head and looked up at Mom seriously. "No, I absolutely won’t marry Derek."

I could see the surprise flicker in her eyes—maybe a little pride, too, that I was standing up for myself.

"He likes Aubrey, and Aubrey’s unhappy with her own engagement and has feelings for Derek, wanting to take this marriage from me. Since both of them want it, why don’t we just let them have it?"

I looked at Mom’s shocked face and smiled. "Mom, go talk to Mrs. Miller and see if they’re willing to swap the marriages. Let Aubrey marry Derek. I’ll take her place with Caleb. It’s cleaner for everyone."

My voice sounded steadier than I felt, but it was the first time in weeks I’d felt a shred of control.
