Chapter 14: The Last Night

That night, as soon as darkness fell, Dan Harper closed the backyard gate.

The wheat was harvested, the corn was planted.

Tomorrow, he would head back to the construction site.

It was a sweltering day.

Dan Harper was restless.

He showered early, then sat on the bed, watching his wife, Lila, bustling around—washing pots and dishes in the kitchen, cleaning son Benny’s face and feet, tucking him into bed…

Dan Harper waited, barely containing himself.

Finally, everything was done, Benny was sleeping soundly. Dan whisked him into the next room.

His last night with his wife had to be passionate and unforgettable.

After all, he wouldn’t be back until Thanksgiving.

When everything was ready, Lila, fragrant and smiling, lifted the beaded curtain and stepped inside.

The scent of her face cream drifted over, and Dan Harper leaped up, pulling Lila onto the bed. She half-resisted, half-laughed, struggling playfully: “So impatient! I haven’t even put on my lipstick yet.”

Dan grinned, “Guess I’ll just have to kiss it off later.”

It was a picture-perfect slice of rural love—the whirr of the ceiling fan, the summer crickets outside, an old country love song playing low on the radio. For a moment, the weight of work and distance fell away, leaving just the two of them, young and giddy.
