Chapter 6: The Price of Obedience

Every time he returned from his trips, Logan would torment me all night.

That night, I did my utmost to please him.

Logan lost control several times, laughing as he pinched my waist. “Why so enthusiastic? Did you miss me too?”

I said nothing.

I only managed to prop myself up and left a trembling kiss on his cheek. My lips lingered, desperate for something—anything—that felt like affection. I wanted to believe, just for a second, that he saw me.

On the bed, I was rarely so forward.

Logan sighed softly. “So obedient.” His hand lingered on my shoulder, almost tender for a moment before the mask slipped back into place.

As dawn neared, I woke and tried to push him away with weak hands.

But he pulled me back into his arms. “Still want to leave?”

I froze. My breath caught, heart hammering in my chest.

Logan nuzzled my face affectionately. “I have a keen sense of smell. I’ve known for a while about you and the lady’s little trick of switching places.”

No wonder... he had become more and more unrestrained each time.

So he had known all along that the woman beside him wasn’t his wife. There was no need for him to hold back.

I asked softly, “Then when does the heir plan to give me a proper place?”

“Status?” Logan chuckled. “You’re staff, Kay. That’s not my call—and you know it. If I insisted, wouldn’t that hurt our marriage?”

“What’s your name? I’ll have someone send you jewelry. When the lady’s health improves, I’ll promote you to bed companion.”

I closed my eyes mockingly. The cold reality settled in, bitter as over-brewed coffee.

“Why give status to a woman you can sleep with for free?” The lady was right.

Affection gained in bed is worth very little.

Seeing I didn’t respond for a long time,

Logan laughed. “What, so happy you’re speechless?”

The words came out rough and strange, as if my voice had forgotten how to work. I laughed, tears streaming down my face before I even realized it. “Thank you for your favor, but I’m afraid I’m not that lucky.”

Logan was stunned, his tone turning cold. “Just being with me for a few years, don’t get too proud.”

“Being a bed companion isn’t enough, you want to be a mistress? You should think about your boss’s reputation.”

He never liked greedy women; his tone carried a hint of anger. His jaw tightened, eyes steeling.

There were a few other women in the Callahan household, all from reputable families, arranged by the powerful.

A maid like me had no right to be the heir’s mistress.

What’s more, after the lady married in, he never visited the other women’s rooms again.

Outsiders all praised the heir for being devoted to his wife, and Logan was happy to hear it.

The lady’s father was a senator, holding great power and helping him both openly and quietly.

If he really took his wife’s maid as a mistress, it would ruin his reputation. The Callahans were the kind of family that ended up in the paper if someone sneezed wrong; scandal was never an option.

The more I thought about it, the sadder and clearer I became.

Today’s words were just a bit of pity from Logan after his pleasure.

Once he calmed down, he would surely regret it.

He was, after all, destined to be a loving husband to the lady for life.

I said quietly, “I wouldn’t dare ask for more. I’m not worthy to stay in your room. I only hope you and the lady will love each other for life and grow old together.”
