Chapter 13: Comfort Food and Secrets
When we went out, staff had already laid out the food from the bag on the table.
The spread was impressive: mac and cheese, chicken tenders, cornbread—comfort food, the kind that could almost make you forget your problems. I dove in, grateful for something warm.
Seeing all my favorite dishes, I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Jacob rolled his eyes at me, "So promising."
He’s just jealous.
I stuck my tongue out at him, making sure Mrs. Greene couldn’t see. It felt good to tease him, even if only a little.
When I was about to start on my third helping of mac and cheese, someone rushed in. When he saw me, he hesitated and didn’t speak.
Jacob gave him a glare, "Speak."
The man fell to his knees with a loud thud. Whatever, it’s something I can’t hear again.
Annoying.
I said to Jacob, "I’m full, I’ll go back first."
Jacob called my name, "Natalie."
I waved my hand to show I really was full.
I could feel the tension lingering in the room, but I kept my head down and left. Sometimes, you just have to let grown-ups sort themselves out.
