Haunted by memories, I gripped my phone, nails digging into my palm as I blinked back tears. WhatsApp pinged—Kunal’s name and a cheeky emoji lit up the screen.
[Why aren’t you replying? What are you doing?]
I typed: [Looking at clothes.]
[Oh right, you haven’t shopped in a while.]
He remembered even the smallest details. Sometimes I wondered what he wanted from me.
Another bank alert: ₹2 lakh, just like that.
[A lot of new spring and autumn styles out—pick some you like. You’d look great in them.]
I couldn’t help a wry smile at the absurdity of it all. I typed quickly, glancing at the closed door, as if Arjun could read my thoughts.
[I can’t shop anymore for now. Arjun’s getting suspicious.]
[He looked really angry and asked where my money came from.]
Kunal replied instantly:
[Then I’ll have my sister buy them and send them to you. Just say it’s a gift from her.]
[But Meera, when are you divorcing Arjun?]
[Is the eldest son of the Khanna family going to be a third wheel forever? 😏]
The question hung, heavier than silence. I typed:
[Don’t rush.]
After all, Kunal isn’t the only one waiting in line.
I smirked, shaking my head at this never-ending daily soap. Ahead of him, there are still two more.
Just then, Amit messaged:
[There’s an auction in a few days—will you come with me?]
[Of course, pick anything you like.]
The irony made me laugh. The same men who warned Arjun about me now showered me with gifts.
The first time I met Amit face to face was at the orphanage, the scent of Dettol and chalk dust heavy in the air.
