I shook my head, the world tilting just a little. “When can you send me home?”
“In five days, the transmission will begin. In these five days, you can say goodbye to everyone here, so you won’t have any regrets…”
And as I lay awake that night, I debated staying—remembering the taste of cherry pie from my old life, the porch swing out front of my childhood home, the way summer rain sounded on a tin roof. But the ache in my chest reminded me: some things are meant to end.
