Chapter 3: Walking Away From Forever
Before Nathaniel could say anything else, I turned and hurried out of Mallory’s apartment.
I didn’t look back. The hallway lights seemed colder, harsher. My footsteps echoed, sharp and lonely, all the way to the elevator.
Nathaniel didn’t chase after me—Mallory had apparently slipped from her wheelchair trying to stop me. He was busy helping her up, comforting her, while she put on her little act, apologizing.
“Nathaniel, was my request too much? Did I make your fiancée angry?”
“It’s nothing. She just needs time to process it. She’ll get it in a few days. I’ll stay here tonight to take care of you.”
He sounded so sure, so gentle. Like he’d already made peace with betraying me, as long as Mallory was okay.
“Okay, but I don’t have… any protection here.”
“Silly, who needs protection to have a baby?”
His tone was cold, but the affection was unmistakable.
And somewhere down the hall, I realized I’d never really known him at all.
Tomorrow was supposed to be about forever. Now I wasn’t sure we’d make it to morning.
