Chapter 6: Queen of the Comeback
After the SATs, Carter confronted me, not even pretending anymore.
"You knew about the app all along? Why sabotage me? Without the app, what do you gain?"
I nodded, grinning. "Without it, how high can you score? 700? 600? Maybe not even 500?"
He was so furious he could barely breathe, looking like he wanted to strangle me. For a second, I wondered if he actually might.
A few girls ran over, shot him a look of contempt, and pulled me away.
"He didn’t hurt you, did he?"
"Why does Carter look so murderous?"
"Now that I look at him, he’s not even handsome. Can’t believe I used to think he was my dream guy."
As we walked, the girls started chatting about college plans.
"Which school do you want?"
"I want Columbia. I heard the cafeteria’s amazing."
"But Stanford has more hot guys. I’m picking Stanford!"
"You’re choosing by food and guys, not major?"
"Hey, whatever you pick, you’ll regret it anyway!"
…
When the results came out, I beat my estimate of 1590 by 10 points, becoming the school’s surprise state top scorer. I stared at the score until my eyes watered.
At graduation, the new homeroom teacher was beaming, shaking my hand. "Unbelievable! Never expected it! We lucked into a top scorer! Hahaha! Thank you, Ms. Monroe! Thank you, district superintendent!" He actually hugged me. I almost laughed.
Before my TV interview, the principal brewed his prized Darjeeling tea for me, smiling so much it was creepy. "Heather, the school was a bit too harsh before, but it was for your own good! Who knew you’d do so well and make us all proud! We’ve prepared a big scholarship and a special Hall of Honor with you at the front! Please praise the school in front of the media, okay?"
I nodded sweetly. "Of course. I’ll be sure to thank the school for all its ‘nurturing’!"
During the interview, I made a point to mention the school and principal. "I want to thank the school for encouraging me to date before the exams, all for the sake of grades! I want to thank my old homeroom teacher for letting me study alone in the hallway, enjoying all that space. I owe everything to my alma mater."
The principal’s face turned ashen. I had to bite the inside of my cheek not to laugh out loud.
After my year, Silver Hollow High completely lost its status as the top school in the city, replaced by the experimental school. As for Carter, he never showed his face again. Rumor has it he scored just over 500. Who knows what school he’ll get into? Who cares. Honestly? I hope he never figures out how to break another girl’s heart again.
