Chapter 6: Balloons, Fairy Lights, and Forever
After graduation, our dorms planned an immersive murder mystery game together. It was a blast. We dressed up, played detective, and accused each other for hours.
On the last night, they called me out to the balcony of a villa. Carter stood outside the railing. I froze, and just as I nervously asked what he was doing, he smiled, let go, and dropped from sight.
"Carter!"
Panicked, I broke free and ran downstairs. The hallway was pitch black for some reason. When I rushed outside, balloons suddenly filled my view. Balloons floated up into the sky. At my feet, countless fairy lights blinked on.
An even grander sea of pink flowers than his last confession filled the yard. Drones spelled out shapes in the sky—a pair of hands, a ring.
My eyes swept the scene, finally landing on Carter, grinning at the end of the flower path. Light shone behind him. My heart had never beat so fast.
My heart had never beaten so fast.
Amid the crowd’s cheers, I walked toward him, eyes wet. He looked into my eyes, smiled, and said, "Savannah Brooks, will you marry me?"
My heart was pounding so loud I could barely breathe. The whole world seemed to hold its breath, waiting for my answer. And in that moment, I knew—this was exactly where I was meant to be.
