Chapter 7: Happily Ever After (Almost)
He was putting in the work. For the next six months, Julian visited my dad often—learning to cook, playing chess.
She was on my side. After one visit, my mom finally spoke up. “Dan, Julian’s a good kid. Stop making things hard for him. He should be out dating, not hanging around you. If this keeps up, you two might as well live together.”
My dad grumbled, “I’m just testing him for our daughter’s sake!”
My mom winked at me. Trust mom to get things done—there’s always someone who can handle someone else!
Finally, some good news. When Julian and I announced our marriage, we were showered with blessings online. As I cried with joy, my dad grabbed my hand, eyes misty. “Savvy, you sure you want to get married? Dad can take care of you forever.”
My mom: … Me: … Julian: …
…
He was emotional. After we got married, Julian’s eyes were red. “Finally, I get to be with you. I’ve waited so long.”
Worth it. I smiled at him, thinking, We’re together because you never gave up.
He had a point. Julian said, “Why didn’t you just tell me the truth back then? All that drama, and your dad almost hated me.”
“I didn’t know how to explain, and our relationship wasn’t stable yet.”
Life, right? I’ve never liked explaining myself. I just wanted a simple love with Julian. Who knew things would get so complicated?
No pressure. “So you better treat me right.”
“At your service, Mrs. Graves!”
