Chapter 6: DNA and Darker Secrets

← Prev

Just as I was rolling up my sleeves, my wife tried to play peacemaker, bringing a few new toy cars for the twins and handing them to Dad. "These are unopened—good as gifts."

She tried to bridge the gap, always the diplomat.

"I don't want your junk!"

He spat the words out, turning on his heel and storming off.

He stormed off, leaving my wife and me standing there awkwardly.

We stood in the hallway, the silence heavy between us.

"Caleb, do you think Dad's going through a midlife crisis?"

She tried to lighten the mood, her voice tinged with hope. I shook my head, a wry smile on my lips.

"No, it's just that after Mom died, his true nature came out. You ever see anyone else get this petty? He only targets us. But when it comes to that woman and her kids, he's all love."

I spoke softly, but there was an edge to my words.

"Yeah, it’s weird. Why is he only good to them? Always calling the twins his 'big boys.' I’ve never heard him say that about you. And besides, Tyler and Trevor aren’t even his real sons..."

She trailed off, her brow furrowed in thought.

My heart skipped a beat.

A cold realization crept over me.

Her words flipped a switch deep inside me.

I lay awake that night, staring at the ceiling, turning her words over and over.

The house was silent, shadows stretching across the hallway.

I moved like a ghost, careful not to wake anyone. The twins snored softly, oblivious. I slipped in, grabbed a few strands of hair, and slipped out again, heart pounding. I didn’t know what I’d find, but I knew I had to know the truth.

Either way, by morning, there’d be no going back.
