Chapter 4: Disinherited—A Throne Up for Grabs

“Fine, get out.”

My voice was cold, final. The words hung in the air, heavy with decades of expectation. I could feel my hand shaking with anger.

He looked at me, shocked, as if he’d never considered the possibility that actions have consequences.

“Since you’re so set on a carefree life, then leave the house today. We’ll let someone else take over the family business.”

The staff murmured among themselves, already wondering who the next heir might be. I saw my younger son straighten his tie, hope flickering in his eyes.

If he doesn’t want to be king, there are others who do.

Ambition is never in short supply in this family. The vultures were already circling.

I thought for a moment, then asked Megan, “Would you consider remarrying?” The words felt heavy, but I had to know. The room froze again.

She bowed her head even lower. “Please calm your anger, Dad. I took vows—I won’t marry again.”

Her voice was soft but steady, full of quiet dignity. I saw the pain in her eyes, the struggle between duty and desire.

Looking at Megan, head bowed so low she nearly touched the ground, I felt unbearably heavy-hearted. “Rise.”

I reached out, my hand trembling, and lifted her chin. She looked up at me, tears shining in her eyes, but her spirit unbroken.

I looked at her, and for a moment, I remembered the spirited young woman who once rode her horse with such pride. Now, standing here, she’s like a sword that’s been broken—her sharpness gone, only silence remains.

The memory hit me hard. She’d been a force of nature, fearless and wild. Now, she was a shadow of herself, worn down by a world that never gave her a fair shot.
