Chapter 6: The Truth Behind the Screens
Carter asked me to visit our old school.
Honestly, I was scared to go back—so many bittersweet memories there.
He waited downstairs, opening the car door for me: "I was never with Emily. I don't like her."
Emily was the class beauty.
He explained, afraid I'd misunderstand.
Maybe he really did like me—the shy me, not the confident, outgoing online persona.
The security guard stopped us at the gate, saying outsiders weren't allowed.
Carter called our old homeroom teacher to come get us.
The teacher came down, out of breath, and the first thing he said was, "I knew you two would end up together."
I was confused—was my crush that obvious back then?
As we walked, the teacher asked, "How'd he chase you?"
"I thought you two got together right after graduation. Can't believe it took this long to visit me."
I stared at their mysterious smiles, speechless.
Carter? Chasing me?
Yeah—when pigs fly.
Carter laughed and rubbed his nose: "I didn't have the guts back then."
What are you two talking about? I don't get it at all.
I don't know what Carter whispered to the teacher, but the teacher left with a knowing smile.
Carter took me to the door of our old classroom, looking gentle.
"Savannah, this is where we first met."
I remembered.
Back then, Carter quietly walked to the seat behind me and tapped my shoulder: "Hi, I'm Carter Woods."
That was when I fell for him at first sight—the start of my ten-year crush. "Hi, I'm Savannah Reed."
He took me to the rooftop, grabbing my hand even though I'm afraid of heights: "This is the first time I saw you cry."
I froze.
That day, I'd heard the rumor about Carter and the class beauty, and my love letter was left unanswered. My crush seemed doomed to stay hidden, so I cried.
Carter looked at me: "The girl who shyly gave me a love letter one day, crying the next—why?"
He remembered that letter, even though it was full of cheesy lines I copied from Tumblr blogs.
So embarrassing…
"That letter—"
