Chapter 5: Overheard Before The Party
The night before his birthday, Carter kept giving me complicated looks. He wasn’t subtle—his eyes kept asking questions his mouth refused to say.
All night, he hovered around me, wanting to talk but never actually saying it. He liked me pliable, not proactive.
I knew he wanted me to ask what was up, so he could casually bring up not wanting to get married. He wanted an opening he could pretend I gave him.
But I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction. I let the silence do the work.
I tiptoed and kissed his cheek, acting sweet. I could play cute when it suited me.
"Baby, wanna?"
Carter stiffened. For the first time ever, he pushed me away from something he never usually refused. That told me more than any speech.
“Haven’t you been saying you’re tired lately?” He tried on concern for size.
I nodded, putting on a disappointed face. If he wanted a performance, I could give him one.
“Alright, I’ll go to bed then.” I made it easy. The point wasn’t tonight.
I pulled up the covers and closed my eyes quickly. I’d never been so awake while pretending to sleep.
About ten minutes later, I heard rustling in the room. The kind that meant snooping, not tidying.
I peeked open my eyes—Carter was bent over, rummaging through my vanity. He wasn’t good at subtle. He was good at getting caught.
After a few minutes, he picked up his phone and left the room. Mission possibly not accomplished.
I got up and went to the door. Carter was sitting in the living room, on the phone with someone. He talked in that low, urgent tone he saved for damage control.
“I couldn’t find the ring at home. Are you sure she’s proposing tomorrow?” So he knew. Of course he knew.
I couldn’t hear the reply, but Carter was visibly irritated. His voice tightened; his jaw did too.
"If she really tries to propose in front of everyone, I’ll dump her right there—embarrass her in front of the whole crowd." He said it like a promise and a threat rolled into one.
Hearing that, I went back to bed and lay down comfortably. If this was our end, I wanted to be rested for it.
