Chapter 5: Everworld’s Real Hero
Soon, the Yang family got in trouble—first for tax evasion, then for all kinds of scandals, especially their chemical plant polluting small towns and causing cancer clusters, with many sick kids.
In the last life, as a ghost following Maddy, I saw a lot of files the crowd couldn’t. I knew some of her family’s dirty secrets.
During the alumni event, I gathered what I knew and anonymously sent it to her rival’s company. Many tax numbers—precise to two decimals—were hard to ignore.
Maybe because Maddy’s performance was way less “entertaining” than the script she wrote for Quinn, the crowd lost interest and kept her at eleven percent. Soon, her support dropped below ten.
I felt dizzy and left that world.
“Doctor, welcome back.”
“Dr. Chen’s virtual world is amazing—it can even erase all my memories!” I climbed out of the sleep pod.
Now that sleep pod tech is standard, after three days inside, my body felt fine.
“Doctor, did you learn anything?”
Looking at my old partner, my eyes sparkled. “This will push the ‘Everworld Project’ forward!”
It’s New Century year 198. The real Quinn Mason was sentenced to death in the virtual world two hundred years ago. My name is Jamie Yu, chief engineer of the ‘Everworld Project.’
Old Century law collapsed and became a tool for the rich. Dr. Chen came from another advanced civilization and brought loads of new tech.
The virtual world is the toughest—still not fully cracked.
Her view of good and evil is unique. She believes the world is always changing, and the definition of good and evil is different in every era. As long as most people support something, it’s good; if most oppose it, it’s evil.
If you have a grievance, you can send your consciousness into the virtual world. Your memories are stripped, and only your instincts of good and evil remain—the people judge.
As long as you live here, you have the right to vote in the virtual world and can watch what happens any time.
Unfortunately, she didn’t stay long before leaving.
After she left, the system managers running the virtual world were infiltrated, and it became a tool for the powerful again.
But people, with the tech seeds left by Dr. Chen, overthrew the old rulers and created the New Century.
To break the cycle and create a fair, beautiful, exploitation-free world, everyone in this century shares a common goal: to create a pure energy world.
Everything is energy—whatever food you want, just think it and it appears; whatever house you want, you can live in it instantly.
Of course, by then, people won’t care about those things. Everyone will be able to fly, travel the universe, and transform at will!
This is the ‘Everworld Project!’
I am Jamie Yu, chief engineer of the Everworld Project. See you in Everworld.
And maybe—just maybe—next time, the universe will cast me as the hero.
