Chapter 4: The Stranger in My Husband’s Skin
Taking a deep breath, I carried the afternoon tea into his office.
I handed out the desserts and coffee to the staff, who cheerfully told me Nathaniel was in a meeting, so I waited in his office.
His phone, his usual tablet, and his computer were all right in front of me. Tempting.
I’d never checked his devices before—Nathaniel never acted like a man with a wandering eye.
But now I was curious.
What if there really was someone else?
Without even thinking it over, I picked up his phone first.
I checked iMessage, texts, photos, call logs—nothing suspicious.
Raising an eyebrow, I grabbed his tablet.
The password was still my birthday.
I unlocked it, but instead of the usual home screen, it showed whatever he’d last been looking at before turning it off.
It was a Reddit post asking for help, titled: [woke up and found myself ten years in the future—my high school crush is now my wife! what do i do?! someone help!]
I raised an eyebrow and scanned the content.
“So, I’m a high school senior who just finished the SATs. Two days ago, I took a nap at home and woke up in a strange city. The girl I like was calling me ‘husband’ and asking when I’d be home...”
I wondered why Nathaniel would be reading something so silly, when I noticed the username: [Maya is my wife].
My eyes widened—my name is Maya! My heart thudded in my chest.
With trembling fingers, I tapped the profile picture, then the user page. When I saw the big words ‘Edit Profile,’ I fell completely silent.
This was Nathaniel’s account!
In other words, he was the one who posted that message!
I sat back in the office chair, the reality of it all washing over me like a cold shower. My mind raced, piecing together every awkward hug, every fumbled kiss, every nervous look. Nathaniel—my Nathaniel—had somehow become a stranger living in my husband’s skin. Or maybe, just maybe, he was still the same man, just lost somewhere between who he was and who he thought he should be. I stared at the screen, heart pounding, wondering what on earth I was supposed to do next.
