Chapter 4: Rivals, Risks, and the Big Reveal
After the show ended, Evan rolled my suitcase as we left. Mason approached, but Evan blocked him. They talked quietly, and Mason left with a dark look, glancing back at me as Evan blocked his view.
I watched the exchange, curiosity burning. Evan’s jaw was set, his eyes hard. Mason’s shoulders slumped as he walked away. I wondered what had been said.
Curious, I asked, “What did you two talk about?”
I nudged Evan, hoping for a straight answer. He just ruffled my hair, his expression softening.
He patted my head. “Grown-up business. Kids don’t need to know.”
I pouted, but let it go. Evan’s protectiveness was both infuriating and endearing. I squeezed his hand, grateful for his steady presence.
The sun was still blazing. This time, Evan pulled a hat from his bag and put it on me, checking to make sure it was on right. With the sun blocked, he took my hand. I asked, “Evan, is there anything you’d ever refuse me?”
He adjusted the brim, his fingers gentle. I looked up at him, searching his face for the truth.
He thought about it. “Other than divorce, anything goes.”
His voice was quiet but firm. I felt my heart skip a beat.
“Anything?”
I raised an eyebrow, testing his resolve. He just nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips.
“Anything.”
He squeezed my hand, eyes shining with love. I felt a lump rise in my throat.
“Why?”
I held my breath, waiting for his answer. He stopped walking, turning to face me fully.
He stopped and looked me in the eyes. “Because I really like you. I just want you to be happy.”
His words settled over me like a warm blanket. I smiled, tears prickling at the corners of my eyes. With Evan by my side, I knew I could handle anything.
