Chapter 4: Protecting the One Who Matters
I grabbed my keys and left. For the first time, I felt free.
Seeing Lauren at the hospital, I couldn’t calm down.
But Lauren was there. Everything softened.
She was the best thing that ever happened to me. I let her slip away once.
In my last life, Lauren never believed I’d run off. She kept searching, only to be beaten by my mom and Samantha.
My mom’s voice, cold and cruel, echoing down the hallway.
Samantha called her shameless, accused her of cheating. When Lauren left, Samantha searched her suitcase and took anything valuable.
The memory makes me sick.
Looking back, I failed her.
I let her down when she needed me most.
After my daughter and I died, she hugged our photos and cried all night.
This time, I’ll protect her.
I blinked back tears.
Never again.
We weren’t married yet. My paycheck still went to my mom—she claimed it was for our wedding, house, and car.
She was stronger than she looked.
Regret is heavy. This time, I’ll do better.
Her embrace grounded me.
