Chapter 4: The New Sacrificial Lamb
"President, if Maddie won’t go, I will. My grades are garbage anyway—extra service hours are just what I need."
Jamie turned to Zoe, eyes shining with gratitude.
"Zoe, you’re amazing."
Then she turned her wounded gaze on me:
"Maddie, why do you help everyone but me? If I did something wrong, just tell me. I don’t want us to fall out."
Zoe rolled her eyes and scoffed, her voice dripping with attitude.
"Actually, that’s fine. At least you know who deserves your time. Maddie, since you’re out, Zoe’s in."
Jamie was working her usual angle.
Who would’ve guessed Zoe would jump at the chance, acting like she’d just hit the jackpot, all smiles and gushing thanks.
But when she glanced at me, her eyes narrowed with resentment—like she was Jamie’s loyal guard dog, ready to bite.
"I know how to pay back kindness. Not like some people who don’t know good from bad. Whatever!"
My anger faded, replaced by a weird anticipation. Would Zoe get caught in the app’s trap, just like I had?
She thought I was mocking her and snapped:
"She’s just putting on an act. Who actually likes her? She’s jealous because you’re pretty and everyone likes you!"
"I’m going. Unlike you, a fake do-gooder. Feeding stray cats is easy. But when it comes to actually helping kids at the group home, you bail. You’re all talk!"
