Chapter 5: The Price of a Hero
In my last life, I lost my legs trying to save the son of the richest man in town.
Jamie was honored as one of the city’s “Top Ten Outstanding Teens,” while I became a social outcast.
My home address was leaked. News vans parked outside, crowding my grandpa’s porch, shouting questions through the screen door:
"You were a teacher once. How did you end up raising a granddaughter like Maddie who hurts people?"
"Some folks say it’s just bad blood. Did you ever see warning signs?"
My grandpa, hair white as snow, squinted at the cameras, shielding his eyes from the glare. They wouldn’t let him close the door, their questions getting meaner by the minute.
"At your age, raising a criminal grandkid, how do you explain your career as a teacher?"
"I hear your old school’s alumni board is considering erasing your name from their wall of honor. Are you worried about your legacy?"
Grandpa broke down, voice shaking, his apology barely audible over his tears.
"I’ve decided to cut all ties with Maddie. Please, just leave me alone."
I woke up in the hospital, groggy from anesthesia, only to see Grandpa’s face twisted with disappointment. I reached out, voice trembling.
"Grandpa..."
He cut me off with a slap, sharp and final.
"Enough! You’re not my granddaughter. I’m only here to say—I told the press I’m done with you. You’re on your own now!"
He hit me again, his shoulders shaking as he tried to hold back tears.
"You weren’t always like this, Maddie. What happened to you?"
I stared at him, stunned into silence.
Then Noah, my childhood friend, came in. The look in his eyes made my stomach twist—a mix of pity and disgust.
"Maddie, I always wanted to go to college with you, to stay close. But I never thought you’d do something so awful. I’m done. Take care."
My thoughts spun out of control. Suddenly, I was back in the present, Zoe’s loud voice pulling a crowd around us.
