Chapter 2: The Final Betrayal
"This is the place. Don't worry, he won't be home now."
Seriously?
Busted.
Lauren recovered first. "What are you doing here?"
She didn't expect me.
I didn't move.
Oh, come on.
Good riddance.
Lauren hugged him. "Don't give up so fast. We haven't even tried yet."
Gross.
Here we go.
"Since you're here, I don't have to wait. Mason needs a hospital bed, and you know someone at the hospital. Call your guy."
Nothing new.
Derek tugged her sleeve. "Mason's scared of hospitals. If only he had a stuffed animal."
My blood ran cold.
Like they owned the place.
She saw my bags. "Where do you think you're going? Half this house is mine."
Unbelievable.
They weren't moving.
I could smell the cheap cologne.
"Ethan, this stuff belongs to Lauren. Why are you arguing with a woman over this?"
They laughed. I didn't.
It was a game to them.
No luck.
She looked thrilled.
Disgusting.
Pathetic.
I didn't answer.
She'd never find it.
I clenched my fists.
He stumbled.
"Get out of my way!"
Drama queen.
Lauren rushed over.
"Ethan, all I wanted was for me and Lauren's kid to get treatment, and you had to push me like that?"
What?
No way.
She looked away.
I believed her.
I was a fool.
For a second, I thought she cared.
Then Derek coughed.
"Derek, your heart's not in great shape. Be careful. If something happens, what about Mason?"
I almost laughed.
She was back to cold.
I watched.
"Ethan, I lied to you. I kept the baby. He's my first child. He means everything to me. Try to understand."
I couldn't believe it.
"Of course I won't let anyone hurt him. If anything happens, it's on you."
It was over.
Or so I told myself.
