Chapter 7: Safe at the Table

She packed in silence, her face blank. I watched from the window, feeling a strange mix of relief and sadness.

She hugged me tight, whispering that things would be better now. I believed her.

Grandpa patted Dad on the back, telling him he’d done the right thing. Dad just nodded, looking exhausted.

After that, it was just my mom’s side at home.

It felt like a fresh start—a new chapter for all of us.

She ranted for a while, then hugged me, her anger fading. "You’re safe now, Addie. That’s all that matters."

Her hands were warm, her voice soft. I shook my head, smiling through my tears.

I whispered, "I’m okay, Grandma. Really."

The doctors said I’d be fine, as long as I stayed away from peas. I promised to be more careful.

They hovered, bringing me snacks, fluffing my pillows, checking my temperature every hour. I didn’t mind—I knew it was love.

We played board games, watched movies, and laughed until our sides hurt. I’d never felt so close to them.

She brought over homemade cookies, her eyes shining with relief. I hugged her, thanking her for saving my life.

Her voice trembled as she told the story, and I realized just how lucky I was.

They brought flowers, wrote thank-you notes, and promised to always look out for each other. Our families became closer than ever.

We shared dinners, holidays, and secrets. It felt like we’d gained a second family.

They made excuses, saying I was sick or busy, anything to keep me safe. I didn’t mind—I had everything I needed at home.

He rolled his eyes, telling me not to worry. "She’s just bitter, Addie. Don’t let her get to you."

She winked, making me laugh. I knew she’d always have my back.

Her voice was gentle, her hands warm. I drifted off to sleep, feeling safe.

His voice was firm, full of promise. I believed him.

No matter what happened, I knew my family would always be there for me.

The pain faded, replaced by hope. I looked forward to the future, knowing I was protected.

Because my family will always protect me.

And that’s the kind of love that lasts.
