Chapter 6: Rooftop Ultimatum
When I got there, Elise was holding Jamie hostage on the rooftop. Police and firefighters were everywhere. They only let me up after I explained how I knew both women.
As soon as I stepped onto the roof, Elise got even more agitated, dragging Jamie closer to the edge, yelling, "Mason, choose! Either I push Jamie off, or I jump! Pick one!"
If I chose Jamie, that would be it—no going back. So I didn’t choose. Instead, I dropped to one knee and pulled out the ring I’d never gotten to use.
"Elise, will you marry me? Don’t do anything crazy. We’ll have a happy family, lots of kids. But if you make a mistake now, it’s over."
I kept my voice soft, trying to reach the part of her that used to care. For a second, Elise’s expression softened. Then she started laughing, bitter and wild.
"Mason! You think I’m stupid? You and that bitch already have a baby on the way! How could you still marry me? You want to ruin my company and dump me, too? Fine—then no one gets to be happy!"
She tightened her grip on Jamie, ready to pull her over the edge with her.
In a flash, I lunged and grabbed both their hands. Elise fought back, but I’d had enough. I finally lost it and yelled.
"Elise, when does this end? You broke up with me, you watched me leave, then you showed up in my hometown and lied to my parents. After all this, how can you not see I’ve moved on? It’s over! The world doesn’t revolve around you!"
With the help of the police, we managed to pull both women to safety. Elise was arrested on the spot. I held Jamie close, unable to let her go. In that moment, it hit me—my feelings for her had grown that night. I loved her—not just because of the baby, but because she was there, real and true.
A month later, Jamie and I went to hire a lawyer and press charges against Elise for attempted murder and kidnapping. There was plenty of evidence—witnesses, rooftop security footage. The charges were serious, and after a long court battle, Elise got fifteen years in prison.
The day the verdict came down, Jamie and I got married at the county courthouse. Both families were there, and we started our new life as a family of three.
