Chapter 6: Alone With Her Lies
When Emily woke up, she called my name a few times, but no one answered. Her voice echoed through the empty apartment, growing more frantic with each call. She searched every room, her panic rising.
"Emily, you're awake!" Carter suddenly walked in, looking both worried and excited. He handed her a bowl of medicine. He hovered in the doorway, a nervous smile on his face. He held out the bowl, his hands shaking. My stomach twisted at the sight.
"Drink this. You just had an abortion. I had this medicine made just for you."
His voice was gentle, almost tender. Emily recoiled, her face twisting in disgust.
Emily's face darkened. She knocked the bowl to the floor, scolding him harshly. The bowl shattered, medicine splattering across the hardwood. She glared at him, her voice sharp and angry.
"Why are you here? Get out! What am I supposed to tell Mason when he gets back?"
She shoved him away, panic in her eyes. Carter looked hurt, confused.
Carter frowned, then sat by the bed, trying to kiss her. Emily shoved him away and slapped him hard. The slap echoed in the quiet room. Carter staggered back, rubbing his cheek. Emily's chest heaved with anger. Her hands shook.
"Are you crazy? What if Mason sees us?"
Her voice was shrill, desperate. She glanced at the door, fear etched on her face.
Her heart was pounding with fear. She had no idea how Carter got in, but she knew she couldn't let Mason see them. If he did, she'd never be able to explain herself.
She paced the room, wringing her hands. She muttered to herself, trying to figure out what to do next. The panic was real.
Carter looked confused, muttering under his breath. He stared at her, brow furrowed, as if he couldn't understand why she was so afraid.
"What's your problem, Emily? Didn't you already tell Mason everything? He called me to take care of you! He even said the divorce papers are ready!"
His words hung in the air, heavy and final. Emily froze, her eyes wide with shock.
Emily froze. She frowned at Carter. Her hands shook as she grabbed his arm, demanding answers. The truth was finally catching up to her.
"What did you say? Divorce papers? Told him everything?"
Her voice was barely a whisper, trembling with fear. Carter looked away, unable to meet her gaze.
A bad feeling crept over her, especially when she realized I was gone. She searched the room, her heart pounding. The realization hit her—she was alone. Truly alone.
"Carter! Explain yourself! What divorce papers!"
Her voice cracked, the panic overwhelming. The walls closed in, the truth finally sinking in. She had lost everything.
And for once, it wasn't me paying the price.
