Chapter 3: Stage Frights and Schemes
Still upset, I wore a worried look when I went to the Governor’s mansion for a holiday gala. My heels clicked on the marble, echoing my nerves. —Showtime.
Somehow, Natalie won the President’s favor and was allowed to perform on the spot. She glowed under the lights, all nerves and excitement. —She was in her element.
She said she wanted to dance Swan Lake—not a problem. But asking me to play the piano to accompany her? Now that was a problem. I could barely plunk out "Chopsticks." —Yikes.
But I’m a professional, so I immediately stood up and said, “I’ve heard Ethan’s a musical genius. Why not let him and Natalie perform together?” I smiled brightly, hoping no one saw through me. —Smooth.
A talented guy and a beautiful girl—let everyone see they’re a perfect match, and also make it clear I have nothing to do with the male lead. Two birds with one stone. My mom would have been proud. —Mission accomplished.
But Ethan clearly didn’t appreciate my kindness. He glanced coldly at me and said, “Miss Carter must have heard wrong. That’s just a rumor.” His voice was ice, and the room felt ten degrees colder. —Ouch.
I glanced cautiously at Natalie’s embarrassed face and silently cursed with her, “Ungrateful guy!” We were united, for once, in our annoyance. —Small victories.
No choice, I took a deep breath and was about to step forward, but Savannah stopped me. “Lex, I know you’re anxious, but don’t rush—let me go instead.”
Worthy of being my confidant, she knew I knew nothing about music and was tone-deaf myself. She gave me a reassuring wink as she took the stage. —Lifesaver.
Even though she and Natalie couldn’t stand each other, she still helped me out of the mess. That’s friendship for you. —Ride or die.
I sat down with a grateful smile, and while Natalie danced, I watched the President’s son and Savannah exchange glances. Sparks flew, and I couldn’t help but grin. —Matchmaker moment.
At that moment, I thought, Savannah really has a lot I need to learn from. She navigated high society like a pro. —Goals.
